HOW TO TRAIN YOUR HERO

How to Train Your Hero is a BNHA fantasy AU zine in which characters are dragon riders!
The name of our zine is a reference to the beloved HTTYD animated movies, but our zine is not a crossover. The reason we decided for this title is because we love HTTYD aesthetic, and aim for our contributors to be inspired by it and use this as a reference for types of dragons you will create; we also want to reference the specific dragon abilities, by having them be synced with quirks.
What does this mean for you?
It means that dragon characters that will be featured will be your own designs, but you are encouraged to follow the HTTYD aesthetic and use existing dragon characters as a reference to create ones that will be our heroes’ companions.
We would also very much love to have little backstories about how each hero came in contact with their dragon; how did they connect, how did they become partners, how do each dragon’s abilities compliment their heroes’ quirks?
CONTRIBUTORS
Who are we looking for, you ask? We want to feature artists and writers in this zine!
Our zine will be opening public applications to gather contributors. Portfolio specifications will be published when we open for submissions. Here’s the estimated preliminary count of contributors we aim to have:
24 artists (including around 3 guests),
2 comic artists,
3-5 writers,
3-5 story illustrators,
3+ merch artists.
Please note that this is a subject to change depending on the quality of applications we’ll get.
We reserve the right to invite more contributors than originally planned should we decide that our applicants aren’t matching the quality we want for this zine.
Our mods will be contributing as potential stretch goal artists and act as pinch hitters should the situation call for it.
ZINE SPECIFICATIONS
We plan for this zine to be printed and come with merch; we will decide on the specific details after we analyze our interest check results.
All profits will be used for production/shipping, potential upgrades and stretch goals; any leftovers will be donated to a charity (TBD later on).
We aim to earn enough profits to compensate all of our contributors with full bundles (and covered shipping), however, in the event that we don’t manage to provide for this - contributors will be compensated with a PDF zine.
Final submission specs:
For artists: You will be provided with a canvas template to use for your contribution; we are still debating on the size and format for the book (most likely A5 or square), so the only thing we can say at this moment is that your piece must be submitted as a .jpeg file with 300dpi resolution in CMYK color mode.
For merch artists: Our production mod will work with you to specify the condition in which your designs must be submitted, depending on what kind of merch we decide to have. For now, we can say that charm designs must be submitted as a .png file, prints as a .jpeg and stickers as a .psd file (or similar) with designs separate from the background - all with 300dpi resolution in CMYK color mode.
For writers: You will be expected to submit well rounded stories with a word count of around 3k. Note that we will decide on word count in detail after we select all applicants and determine the number of pages we’ll have.
